Psychiatry is a study of mental illness, its causes, diagnosis, and treatment. It is the practice of using medications and other techniques, such as psychotherapy. Psychiatrists are highly skilled professionals who collaborate with families, patients and other healthcare workers to help them overcome the signs of mental illness.

The majority of NHS services in England are provided by clinical commissioning group (CCGs). They are responsible for arranging NHS services in their area. CCGs have a legal obligation to ensure that they are in compliance with the national standards of care for patients. They also have a legal duty to respect patients rights and preferences. In some instances the patient's preference for the provider might not be implemented correctly. In these cases the patient should first talk to their GP to explain the situation.
If a doctor refuses a referral, the patient is able to contact their local clinical commissioning group and complain about this decision. The CCG will investigate the complaint and determine what steps to take. Patients can also apply for an independent complaint advocate to support them throughout the process.

This is why it is essential to be open with your GP about how long you expect the examination to take. If you do not tell them, they may not be able to give you the best advice.
We accept referrals from GPs
Right to Choose allows GPs to refer patients to specialist treatment, including psychotherapy, medication, and other medications under the NHS. They can do this with any provider who has a standard agreement with the CCG or NHS England. However, a GP can only do this if they and the patient are both in agreement with the procedure. The doctor will have to explain this to the patient, and submit an Individual Financial Request (IFR) for their doctor in order to receive prior approval.
To understand how doctors make referral decisions, the TAG team conducted a series focus group sessions that were facilitated by GPs and MHPs at eight different GP practices. The conversations were recorded on audiotape and transcribed verbatim. In general, doctors were reluctant to refer patients to medication or psychotherapy. They were concerned that patients might not be able cope with any additional treatment and could not attend follow-up sessions. Many GPs believed that liaison psychiatry had inadequate resources and was oversubscribed.
The results of this study revealed that GPs rely more on pre-existing relationships and knowledge to make referral decisions than they do on the specific needs of a patient. This was evident in all the taped meetings. CMHT leaders and Psychiatrists also spoke out about their views on the competence of each individual GPs This was evident in all of the recorded meetings.

The demand is particularly high for services that are specialized like ADHD assessments and the diagnosis of perinatal issues. The current pandemic is causing an enormous increase in the number of people referred to mental health teams within communities for help. This has resulted in an increase in need for psychiatry assessments and a higher workload for staff. The rapid onset of the pandemic meant that it was difficult for doctors and other healthcare professionals to keep up with the number of referrals. This led to many inappropriate referrals.
In response to this, we conducted a qualitative study that was embedded within a randomised controlled trial to examine the effectiveness of a variety of strategies aimed at improving the quality of mental health referrals. This included interviews with GPs, community mental health team (CMHT) consultants and recording of referral allocation meetings. The findings of the study revealed that the use of a bespoke referral route was a successful way to manage the workload of GPs as well as CMHTs and also provide patients with the choice they want to be treated effectively.
